{"id":2039,"date":"2023-03-01T08:39:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-01T08:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ld-wp.template-help.com\/wordpress_58404_v4\/?p=2039"},"modified":"2023-03-07T17:19:55","modified_gmt":"2023-03-07T17:19:55","slug":"spending-records-smashed-in-winter-transfer-window","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ld-wp73.template-help.com\/wordpress\/prod_3201\/v3\/2023\/03\/01\/spending-records-smashed-in-winter-transfer-window\/","title":{"rendered":"Spending records smashed in winter transfer window"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The British transfer record was smashed on deadline day as an unprecedented January transfer window ended with Premier League clubs having spent \u00a32.8bn during the 2022-23 season.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chelsea&#8217;s 121m euro (\u00a3107m) deal for Benfica&#8217;s&nbsp;<strong>Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; once confirmed &#8211; will take the total expenditure by top-flight clubs in January to a record-breaking \u00a3815m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than \u00a3275m was spent on deadline day alone before the window closed for English clubs at 23:00 GMT on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The deadline day outlay was an increase of 83% on the previous January record of \u00a3150m, set in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, while an all-time high season expenditure across both the summer and winter windows was guaranteed after a&nbsp;<strong>record of \u00a31.9bn was set in September<\/strong>, the final total is double the previous record of \u00a31.4bn in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2018 winter record spend of \u00a3430m by Premier League clubs had also already been smashed prior to Tuesday&#8217;s deadline day, with the eventual total in 2023 an increase of 90% on that &#8211; and almost triple the previous January window (\u00a3295m), according to financial services firm Deloitte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Premier League&#8217;s financial dominance in Europe increased to the highest proportion ever reported, as the spending by English top-flight clubs accounted for 79% of the total across Europe&#8217;s &#8216;big five&#8217; football leagues, where January spending fell by 35% from 2022 to \u20ac255m (\u00a3225m).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, Chelsea spent more in January&nbsp;<strong>&#8211; around \u00a3288m &#8211;<\/strong>&nbsp;than the combined total of all clubs in the Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A, and Ligue 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among English Football League clubs, spending rose to \u00a325m, up from \u00a320m in the previous winter window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, just 3% of Premier League clubs&#8217; total outlay (\u00a325m) was spent on acquiring players from the EFL, with a record 85% spent on talent playing outside the UK.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tim Bridge, the lead partner in Deloitte&#8217;s Sports Business Group, said: &#8220;The record spending by Premier League clubs this season is beyond anything that we&#8217;ve seen before.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Premier League clubs have outspent those within the rest of Europe&#8217;s &#8216;big five leagues by almost four to one in this transfer window, allowing them to hold on to their key players while attracting top talent from overseas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The British transfer record was smashed on deadline day as an unprecedented January transfer window ended with Premier League clubs having spent \u00a32.8bn during the 2022-23 season.
