{"id":91,"date":"2016-01-24T12:39:31","date_gmt":"2016-01-24T12:39:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ld-wp73.template-help.com\/wordpress\/prod_59005\/v2\/?p=91"},"modified":"2025-11-19T12:15:44","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T12:15:44","slug":"brewers-conference-in-frankfort-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ld-wp73.template-help.com\/wordpress\/prod_59005\/v2\/events-photos\/brewers-conference-in-frankfort-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Lager beers VS Ales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Where:<\/strong><br \/>\n119 Metker Trail, Stanford, KY 40484, United States<\/p>\n<p><strong>When:<\/strong><br \/>\n14th,-20th September, 2016<br \/>\n19:00<\/p>\n<p><strong>What:<\/strong><br \/>\nBarleywine, despite all the beauty of its heady flavors, is a mysterious and somewhat controversial beer style that doesn&#8217;t yet have a strong standing or following among the beer-goers.<\/p>\n<p>Its origins are somewhat nebulous too, with beer historian Martyn Cornell (who I defer to on history matters) essentially stating that there\u2019s no reasonable difference between a barleywine and \u201cold ale,\u201d and questioning whether the former should be used as a more appropriate term.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, the well-established fact is that your regular barleywine (or a barleywine-styled ale, as some states demand it to labeled to avoid the &#8220;wine-beer&#8221; consumer confusion) is a naturally strong drink.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, depending on whether it is of an American or a British origin, this style of beer has either a deep golden color or a fruit-esque, deep brown hue.<\/p>\n<p>Anyways, for this Beer Tasting event, which our pub will be hosting for 7 days straight this September, we were able to assemble 35 barleywines for a blind tasting.<\/p>\n<p>It is a fair bet to say, that all beers were so good, that we hardly imagined how to rank those.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#1: Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine Style Ale<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>City: Chico, CA<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ABV: 9.6%<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The verdict:\u00a0 <\/strong>It completely proved itself one of the best, upholding its status as one of the first barleywines brewed in America. The taste is somewhat bitter, similar to DIPA and with some grapefruit notes.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3366\" src=\"https:\/\/ld-wp73.template-help.com\/wordpress\/prod_59005\/v2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/blog-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"894\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ld-wp73.template-help.com\/wordpress\/prod_59005\/v2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/blog-2.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/ld-wp73.template-help.com\/wordpress\/prod_59005\/v2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/blog-2-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ld-wp73.template-help.com\/wordpress\/prod_59005\/v2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/blog-2-1170x817.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/ld-wp73.template-help.com\/wordpress\/prod_59005\/v2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/blog-2-600x419.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>#2: Creek Brewery Fisticuffs<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>City: Kemp, TX<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ABV: 9.5%<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The verdict:\u00a0<\/strong>This English-styled barleywine ale is definitely fruit-forward!<\/p>\n<p><strong>#3: Alesmith Old Numbskull<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>City: San Diego, CA<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ABV: 11%<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The verdict:\u00a0<\/strong>Its ho-forward taste, the citrus and tropical fruits hints just make it right for us!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3368\" src=\"https:\/\/ld-wp73.template-help.com\/wordpress\/prod_59005\/v2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/blog-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ld-wp73.template-help.com\/wordpress\/prod_59005\/v2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/blog-8.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/ld-wp73.template-help.com\/wordpress\/prod_59005\/v2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/blog-8-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ld-wp73.template-help.com\/wordpress\/prod_59005\/v2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/blog-8-1170x780.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/ld-wp73.template-help.com\/wordpress\/prod_59005\/v2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/blog-8-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>#5: Starr Hill Barrel-Aged Bandstand Barleywine<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>City: Crozet, VA<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ABV: 13.5%<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The verdict:\u00a0<\/strong>This beer has been visiting a whiskey barrel for aging, which contributes to its taste being dry enough, with oak accents.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#6: Central Waters Barleywine<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>City: Amherst, WI<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ABV: 11.5%<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The verdict:\u00a0<\/strong>Some nice dark maltiness,on par with incredible aromatics (due to barrel-aging), made this beer one of our favorites so far!<\/p>\n<p><strong>#7: Hopworks Urban Brewery Noggin Floggin<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>City: Portland, OR<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ABV: 11%<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The verdict:\u00a0<\/strong>This barleywine beer is complex enough, hitting the twin notes of fruit and American hops equally forward, which makes for an effective combination. Initial flavors feature rich fruits\u2014fresh cherry, licorice and dried raisin\u2014and resinous hops, but this is one we found to open up over time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#8: New Belgium Blackberry Barleywine<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>City: Fort Collins, CO<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ABV: 10%<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The verdict:\u00a0<\/strong>If this was the wine tasting contest, we&#8217;d say this one is too jammy&#8230; Funny enough, when we&#8217;re talking a barleywine tasting and suddenly that\u2019s a much more desirable quality! A flavor-rich shot of blackberry also announces its presence immediately, which swayed us towards liking this beer a lot!<\/p>\n<p><strong>#9: Firestone Walker Helldorado<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>City: Paso Robles, CA<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ABV: 13.2%<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The verdict:\u00a0<\/strong>As far as we&#8217;re concerned, this is definitely a weird beer, a \u201cblonde barleywine\u201d (of which we had several) aged in whiskey barrels, which produces a beer that is even more different than one might expect. The sharp taste derived via barrel-aging seems even more aggressive, while the dark\/dried fruit comb doesn&#8217;t help much&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>#10: Lagunitas Olde GnarlyWine<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>City: Petaluma, CA<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ABV: 10.6%<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The verdict:\u00a0<\/strong>This kind of a barleywine beer is essentially hop-forward, American barleywine\u2014hoppier than most, with a nice citrus taste that balances toasty malt and caramelized sugar nicely. It\u2019s a touch sweeter than some of the others that also feature notable hops, which gives the citrusy hops an enjoyable, juicy impression&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>#11: 10. Clown Shoes Billionaire<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>City: Ipswich, MA<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ABV: 12%<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The verdict:\u00a0<\/strong>This is a complex, subtle brandy barrel-aged English barleywine. In fact, this was one of the most subtle barrel-aged beers. It has a funny fruity note to it, with cocoa-like richness in the finish and flavors that continue to develop and unfold as it warms.
